Tis the season of tricks and treats and boy do we have a treat for you! Several of my clients had expressed an interest in making a Halloween video. Since music therapy is a growing field and many people do not understand what it is we do, I felt this video would be a fun way of demonstrating some of the benefits of music therapy. With the exception of the very quiet professional recording playing in the background (sung by M Ryan Taylor), all of the artwork, music (piano and voice), pictures, and video were done by a few of my clients between the ages of 2 and 13. While the children were clearly having a blast, they were also working on several goal areas as well! Skill areas addressed while making this music video include: academic skills (i.e. counting, one-to-one correlation, etc.), attention to task, communication skills (i.e. expressive and receptive communication), fine motor skills (i.e. finger dexterity, finger isolation, etc.), gross motor skills (i.e. two-hand coordination, crossing midline, etc.), musical concepts (i.e. beat, rhythm, tempo, etc.), self-esteem/confidence, social skills (i.e. collaboration, sharing, teamwork, etc.), and speech (i.e. inflection, enunciation, etc.). These are just a few of the goal areas addressed through music therapy.
